Ingredients

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

1 cup water

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)

2-3 tbsp milk (for frosting)

1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)

Optional: chocolate chips or nuts for topping

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch square baking pan.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the water, vegetable oil, apple cider vinegar, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Combine and Stir: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture. Stir gently until the batter is smooth and well incorporated, but do not over-mix.

Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool: Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare Frosting: While the cake is cooling, prepare the frosting. In a medium bowl, mix the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until you achieve a smooth, spreadable consistency. Adjust the milk for desired thickness.

Frost the Cake: Once the cake is completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top. Optional: sprinkle chocolate chips or nuts on top for added texture.

Serve and Enjoy: Slice the cake into squares, serve, and enjoy your moist and flavorful Depression Cake!
